The Student Government Association at Youngstown State University in Ohio decided to take down some controversial Straight Pride flyers hung around campus. The SGA decided that the flyers crossed the line in a few ways: they were unauthorized, had coarse language, and “missed the point of minority activism.”
So what did the flyers say? Among other things, they were pointing out that heterosexuals don’t annoy everyone by focusing on their sexual orientation. In fact, one of the “activities” encouraged for Straight Pride week was just “go[ing] about your day without telling everyone about how ‘different’ you are.”
Also of interest, the Straight Pride flyer was not intended to condemn homosexuals. It says quite explicitly:
Brought to you be the students that are sick of hearing about your LGBT pride. Nobody cares what you think you are, or what you want to have sex with, We have nothing against your sexual orientation. We just don’t give a f**k.
So what did the SGA mean about the flyers misunderstanding the point of minority activism? Perhaps SGA VP Jacob Schriner-Biggs can help us out from within the politically correct oasis of his hyphenated last name:
When you are talking about minority activism, it is very easy that if you are in the majority to say “Well, this sort of activism is not necessary. This sort of zeal in your activism is over the top.” For minorities who experience discrimination, that is not the case.
Yeah, but what would you call the un-brainwashed at liberal universities? They’re a minority, right? So why not view this Straight Pride flyer as minority activism?
Then there are these enlightening comments from SGA President Michael Slavens concerning free speech:
We have to be careful with the whole free speech issue. But then if you actually read through it, it seemed like it went way further than a free speech issue. There were swear words and took it a little further than the average free speech should go.
The “average free speech”? What in the world is that? It’s like a sign saying “Unlimited Cookies!!!!! (Limit: 1 per person).” It’s ridiculous. Anyway, have these enlightened gentlepersons ever been to a Gay Pride parade? They are more offensive than this flyer by far: profanity being the least of the obscenities on full public display. But that doesn’t matter. Minority activism is allowed to be loud, vulgar, and obnoxious. Because minorities need to shout louder to be equal to the multiplied quieter voices of a larger multitude. Whatever.
