Pope Francis is set to visit the White House, and Obama is apparently seeing just how far the Pope’s famous tolerance can go. Obama has invited quite a few people to meet Pope Francis at the White House, and few of them fall squarely into any category one could consider “orthodox”:
In a stunning show of political indecorum, Obama has invited a series of individuals who publicly flout Catholic teaching, including a pro-abortion religious sister, a transgender woman and the first openly gay Episcopal bishop, along with at least two Catholic gay activists. . . .
One of the invitees, retired Episcopal bishop Gene Robinson, made history by becoming the first openly gay episcopal bishop in 2003 and subsequently the first to divorce his gay partner in 2014, after having previously separated from his wife of 14 years. He has attended a number of religious events with the Obama administration, offering a prayer at President Obama’s inauguration in 2009 and taking part in the 2014 National Prayer Breakfast.
Oh, bother. The transgender woman, Mateo Williamson now identifies as a “gay man,” saying she has never been attracted to women. Which might lead some people to wonder why she “became” a man at all? “Vivian” Taylor, another transvestite invited to the White House for Pope Francis’s visit, reported excitedly that he would be inviting a couple friends to “bring some LGBT representation to the event.” As if that were necessary.
Just what Obama hopes to accomplish with his choice of invitees is anyone’s guess. Is he trying to insult Pope Francis? Or is he just hoping to represent American Catholicism in a more liberal light? It will be interesting to see how Pope Francis deals with his audience. Will he address LGBT concerns in his speech to Congress? Who knows. Oh, America. It seems right that the world is laughing at you.
