Uncle Thomas, Affirmative Action, and the Recent SCOTUS Decision

Recently, the Supreme Court decided to uphold Michigan’s ban of affirmative action as it applies to college applicants. In other words, the Supreme Court said that Michigan was allowed to look at college applicants entirely on merit, with no consideration of their race. The decision passed the Supreme Court with six votes in favor, two against, and one abstention.

You would think most people would be happy about this. I mean, aren’t we all supposed to be color blind? Let everyone have a fair shake without regard to their race, right? Not right, apparently. Most leftists at least, think this decision against affirmative action is yet another “blow” to civil rights.

The most vehement dissenting voice in the Supreme Court came from Justice Sotomayor, who wrote a 58-page minority report lambasting the majority opinion. Among many other things, she said:

The Constitution does not protect racial minorities from political defeat. But neither does it give the majority free rein to erect selective barriers against racial minorities.

Sorry, Justice Sotomayor, but this doesn’t erect selective barriers. It actually removes them. Wait. Do you even know what affirmative action is?

Among liberal opponents to the majority opinion, criticism was most vicious toward Clarence Thomas, the only black member of the Supreme Court. He was called an Uncle Thomas, a traitor, a token black, etc. All because he firmly holds the opinion that applicants to jobs and colleges should be judged on their qualifications, not their race.

Of special interest here is the fact that Sotomayor was a beneficiary of affirmative action laws. She was admitted to Princeton and Yale Law School through the “special door” of affirmative action (her own words). So it makes sense she should be a supporter of the very legislation that made her career possible. Because, let’s face it, she’s not otherwise qualified.

Clarence Thomas, on the other hand, has been outspoken about how destructive affirmative action has been to him personally, mostly because he hasn’t actually needed it to succeed.

Thomas has recollected that his Yale law degree was not taken seriously by law firms to which he applied after graduating. He said that potential employers assumed he obtained it because of affirmative action policies. According to Thomas, he was “asked pointed questions, unsubtly suggesting that they doubted I was as smart as my grades indicated.”

Notice the reality here. Clarence Thomas earned his degree and his place in the court. So, to him, affirmative action calls into question that he really is on equal footing with his peers. Sotomayor, on the other hand, proves every day just how unqualified she is for this job. So, to her, affirmative action is a golden ticket to unearned success. She actually doesn’t care if it’s racist. She actually wants minorities given opportunities she doesn’t believe they could get otherwise. And who is the real racist?

Affirmative action is racist. Kudos to the Supreme Court for leveling at least this one strike against it.

  1. Affirmative action started somewhere around 1964. This is 2014. That is 50 years of affirmative action. How many years does it take before these people can stand on their own two feet?

    • They will never stand on their own simply because they do not want to. Why should they, affirmative action, grants, priority for jobs, priority for welfare and housing and if they want anything else they only have to holler discrimination and the politicians will come running to give it to them. They need to be simply cut-off and allowed to advance or sink on their own like everyone else. That is equality and what they have been asking for. Time to give it to them.

      • Wouldn’t it be NICE (aka FAIR) to REMOVE one’s NAME and GENDER from College Applications (hell, ALL Applications – including employment)?

Wouldn’t it be NICE (aka FAIR) if your acceptance to college and/or a job was based on your QUALIFICATIONS, and NOT some artificial (INSULTING) belief that Minorities CAN’T compete on their own MERIT?

Frankly, I don’t know why minorities aren’t PISSED that the Liberal Democrats are CONSTANTLY insisting that YOU CAN’T MAKE IT one your own (that without THEIR “help”, you’d be NOTHING)!

AND, these SAME Liberal Democrats INSIST that Conservative Republicans are the racists! Bull Crap!

Yet the majority of minorities VOTE for these SAME Liberal Democrats (who think so LITTLE of YOU and your abilities)!

  2. Understand… not all minorities approve of affirmative action.

Like Clarence Thomas, I believe it will hurt me more than help me.
I’d like to do this on my own, thank you.

    • Clarence Thomas enjoys perks from rich Americans. He’s been on their planes, dined with them and enjoyed the company of the 1% very well. He’s the last person to consult on racism.

Have you ever been turned away from restaurants and stores because of your color?
Has any bus driver told you to go to the back of the bus?
Have you ever been prevented from entering college property?
Would you still feel better on your own if you were turned down for jobs because of the color of your skin?

      • The answer to all of your questions is NO, and you haven’t either unless you are over 70 years old. Actually there was one time that I was turned away from a restaurant in Chicago when a group of dark complexion people, probably spanish or Zimbabwean, slammed the door in my face. It was surprising because I am black.

        • That was the reality of racism in the south before the late 1960’s. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is still needed today.

        • I was with a friend and we were shopping. We need a taxi. We walked up to a driver in his car and asked for a ride. He took one look at us and said, “No.” He was completely indifferent. We then asked him to call for another driver to come pick us up. He barely looked at us and again he said, “No.” It took me a long time to realize that that driver wouldn’t give us a ride because my friend was black.

          • How many times does a cabbie have to be robbed by black men before he refuses to give them a ride. Maybe you should drive a cab for a month in a large city before you make the claim of racism.,

          • We were both well-dressed. It was a sunny Sunday afternoon – not Saturday after the bars closed.
You r stereotyping just promotes racism.

      • From the way you are writing, even I, a high school grad can tell you never have been subjected to those actions. Ask someone who has. Let me recommend Doctor Walter E. Williams, Doctor Thomas Sowell, Doctor Clarence Thomas, Doctor William Cosby or Doctor Condoleeza Rice. Pay attention when they answer you. You will be hearing words of WISDOM. Or just ask an unassuming neighbor of mine, A man of 75 years who with his wife paid the costs for one daughter and two sons to attend college and develop their lives. He lost his wife a few years ago, but remains active in the area teaching youngsters how to keep their lives together.
Or you could just lean back, light another joint and complain about not being given something you didn’t earn.

          • Read “Black Girl Bleed Alot” if you want to see the truth.

The book documents black on white violence.
If you want a better life, make one for yourself.
Don’t rob, rape, murder… lookin’ for fun.

Why do we continue to insult minorities by insisting they can’t do it on their own?

          • All those I mentioned are Black Americans. Not African – Americans, Not Separate but Equal Americans. Each is old enough to have lived during the bad times and some were visited by stupid racism. Condoleeza Rice’s father taught her that whatever she would become was what she made of herself. She’s quite a lady. Try reading a little history Woonsocket. If you are referring to “Black Black Fokes from the Hood” say so, don’t insinuate you speak for all black Americans.
My Company Commander in Basic training at Ft Ord Sept-Dec 1955 was the first high ranking black man I saw. Before being transferred out of his organization, I and 150 other Texans, would be ready to follow that man through hell. BTW, he got his the hard way. He earned it on the frozen hills of Korea. That was without the handout of affirmative action.

      • No to all of your questions.

You say Thomas is “the last person to consult on racism.”
        Why?
Because he made a success of himself on his own?

        I don’t want help… And I don’t need it.

        • Jessica that NOT true. If CT was white he would have NEVER made it into Yale and Bush would have never even considered putting him on the supreme court.

          • Nope, CT admits he only got to Yale because of affirmative action & he was nowhere NEAR qualified to sit on the supreme court when Dubya’s daddy put him there.

      • Barack Hussein Obama enjoys perks from rich Americans. He’s been on their planes, dined with them and enjoyed the company of the 1% very well. He’s the last person to consult on racism.
You are so full of it goonsprocket.

  3. Racism reared its ugly head when Obama was first running for office. He had more death threats than any other politician running for President. Conservatives who aren’t racists remained quiet and that makes them accessories by proxy.

    • You’re completely FOS, woonsocket. I despise Obama for what he is, a communist, and everything he stands for, not because of the color of his skin.

      • Who told you that he’s a communist? He’s actually governing like a moderate. Communism is a dictatorship and there is no human rights. We have 3 branches of govt.

BTW, are you in favor of socialist Medicare? It’s a govt. program and it’s a big one. Paul Ryan wants to turn it into a voucher program. He’s been on the news and on the internet saying that for years. His first proposal was to give each senior $2,000.00/yr. After that, seniors are on their own. That includes senior Republicans.

        • Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, are you joking? Moderate??? He is so far left, he is off the charts. I agree with Okie, he is a communist. He is governing like a dictator, writing his own laws and deciding which laws he wants enforced. 3 branches of government??? He and his lib friends run all 3 branches. There is only about 20 people in D.C. that even remotely understand what the Constitution is. Barry probably knows but he doesn’t like it so he re-defines those parts he doesn’t agree with. That sir, is a communist dictator. I can’t wait to put someone in that office that is truly a Constitutionalist. NOTICE… I did not say a republican.

          • Just how stupid does someone have to be to believe that the results of a communist in the white house would be that the stock market AND corporate profits would SOAR to all time highs????

          • Yes, and passes The ACA in a Founding Father-approved, constitutionally clean process [no short cuts] involving all 3 branches.

Seems … Only in America’s Wall Street mentality, the one guy scoring more instant billions of personal wealth from the 5 year stock market run-up than anyone else on the planet, spends $70+ million to defeat him in ’12 and upwards of $100 million in ’14 just for spite ~ after the POTUS leaves the Masters of the Universe alone and un-prosecuted as promised, and allowing the Fed to ‘recapitalize’ the too big to fail banks .[give essentially free money]

Of course, this Tea Bagger – Founding Father fetish vacillates depending on what side Obama takes. e.g. Tea Party rancor to impeach Obama for assassinating Osama Bin Ladin w/o the due process of a trial. Same folks throw a fit when Obama suggests imprisoning Cheney’ legal-limbo Guantanamo POW’s.

It’s not so much the de jour political opinions of archetypal Conservative/Tea Party Americans I find so bewildering, it’s the missing link surfacing in Ron’s response to woonsocket’s concise, factually clean details ~a style similar to yours as well.
The missing link: comprehension skills. Or … maybe it’s much less complicated: what Reagan taught the GOP/FOX News program directors: limit your daily message to just 3 or 4 concepts ~ repeat & repeat & repeat.

But now I’m stepping on the genius toes of Joseph Gobbels. And them are everybody’s fightin’ words.

          • How very true. People like Sheldon Adelson & the Koch brothers have done extremely well since Obama became President. They turn around try to ruin this administration because a few billion just isn’t good enough.

    • You got it wrong it is not because of his black skin but because of his his black uncaring for anyone but himself, heart. His black heart causes him to aim at complete control of the citizens of America. I do not believe he cares anything at all for black people, except for his own black skin. He wants the American citizen to say “how far?” when he says JUMP SUCKER.”

    • “My grandmother was a typical white woman”. “The police acted stupidly”. “If I had a son he would look like Trayvon Martin”.

  4. What is it liberals don’t get? Equally opportunity I thought was the goal? Silly me … I don’t really believe they know
what they want. It appear some of them want equality PLUS! There is a long list of blacks that have pulled themselves out of poverty with the help of parents who encouraged them, hard work and sacrifice. Then instead of being held up as role models they are labeled Uncle Tom’s. Uncle Tom indeed, I believe he was a hero to many of his time. He risked his life helping his people, it is too bad his reputation has been so distorted.

  5. White America has given the Blacks everything – freedom, education, racial quotas for jobs and schooling, and equality where ever possible. In many cases the discrimination has been against the whites for giving too much to the blacks who are in many cases not qualified for what they get at the expense of someone more qualified.

On the other hand – it is the Blacks who will not let this racial issue die. They push, demand, accuse and continue to rant and rave about essentially nothing. They are the ones that want more welfare, they are the ones that won’t take or quit jobs, they are some of the biggest drug users; they are the ones quitting school in record numbers; they are the ones that commit the most crimes in America; and they are the ones who have been given priority for just about everything. I’m sorry they don’t appreciate our efforts – perhaps they should make some efforts of their own.

If Blacks have a racial issue then it is the Blacks who are pushing it. I no longer have any sympathy. They have had 3 generations to get their act together
and they still claim we owe them. There are no more slaves and we do not owe them anything . We have done all we can and if they are ignorant, poor, uneducated and depressed it is because they choose to be so.

      • *LOL* *LOL* Those racial quotas are real job killers for us. They get all the great jobs like flipping burgers, cleaning hotel rooms, mowing lawns, cleaning floors, shining shoes & carrying luggage/

    • Yes, all blacks must get back on the democrat plantation immediately. Otherwise their masters shall call them uncle tom, Oreo, Aunt Jemmimah, and worse. Don’t you uppity conservative blacks know that all blacks must think alike?

      • Do you realize Uncle Thomas is taking away your rights, too.

        CORPORATIONS ARE NOT PEOPLE!
Billionaires should not have more rights than you!
Oligarchies and Plutocracies are not DEMOCRACIES…..
Wal-Mart has its own slaves getting payed $40 a month in China.
They work 6 days a week and 12 hr. days…
Mr. Thomas is their stooge and Uncle Thomas…

  6. America is still a deeply racist country

Gone is the overt, violent, and legal racism of my childhood in the 1960s. It’s been replaced by a subtler, still ugly version”

“Miss America Victory Marred by Racist Slurs”
    http://newsfeed.time.com/2013/09/16/miss-america-victory-marred-by-racist-slurs/

    • America is a deeply racist country because of people like Obama, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and idiots like you and LABobE. But it’s not coming from the right, it’s coming from your side. The only time the democrats pay any attention to blacks or Latino’s is election time.

      • Of course!!! The lily white party of X confederate states aren’t the racist party. The reason why the GOP gets about the same amount of support from blacks as the KKK is blacks are just to stupid to realize which party has their best interests in mind!

        • The KKK and the Jim Crow Laws were a creation of the democrat party, not the Republican Party. And it’s awfully racist of you to call the blacks stupid, isn’t it, Bobbie? It’s funny how the democrats won’t have anything to do with blacks or Hispanics unless it’s around election time. They’re starting to finally realize that the communist liberals are only using them for votes.

          • If you did go to Indiana U (which I seriously doubt), get a refund! the Republican party was the progressive party in the U.S., a coalition of anti-slavery activists and northern industrialists. And it was the Democratic Party that was the conservative party, bellowing about states rights from its base in the South, willing to fight to the death in defense of a society that held millions in bondage. It wasn’t until a century later when Democratic President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, horrifying the South, that the political party re-alignment began. And thanks largely to Nixon’s Southern strategy and Reagan’s masterful embrace of Southern social conservatism, the red tide of Republican dominance took hold in old Dixie. The name of the party has changed, but Southern ideology has not. the South, that region of the country with the longest cultural memory, has done a complete 180 in the last 150 years to embrace the man it once vilified as the devil.
As for blacks. I’m not the one calling them stupid. YOU are the dimwit that thinks the Dem’s are “using them” but for some reason 97% of blacks disagree with you so, please tell me what the reason could be???

          • Anyone, regardless of race or political persuasion, that really want to know the truth of who really was for & against the civil rights acts only needs to search the web for things like “civil rights 1860’s”, “civil rights 1930’s”, then look up the history surrounding the 1963/64 civil rights acts. If you dig deep enough you can even see the voting records of Congress. As I recall, it was a Democrat that tried to keep the schools segregated in the 60’s. Please look for yourself. Don’t blindly believe anyone here or anywhere else.

          • You don’t have to dig very deep to realize that those opposed to civil rights were conservative Christians living in the south.

  7. “The Constitution does not protect racial minorities from political defeat. But neither does it give the majority free rein to erect selective barriers against racial minorities.”

On the contrary. The Preamble to the Constitution, drafted by a representative body exclusively White and overwhelmingly Christian, states plainly that the Constitution was enacted to secure the blessings of liberty for itself and its posterity. This nation was conceived by and for WASP’s and kindred peoples.

  8. The Shared Agendas of George Soros and Barack Obama

    By Discover The Networks

    February 2011

While George Soros was busy bankrolling his battalion of established activist groups and launching a few new ones of his own, he quite naturally looked toward the upcoming presidential election of 2008 with great anticipation, eagerly awaiting the day when George W. Bush would finally leave office. The question was, who would replace him? In recent years, all indications had been that Soros favored Hillary Clinton above most, if not all, other potential Democratic candidates for President. But now there was a new face on the scene¯a young, charismatic U.S. senator from Illinois named Barack Obama¯who seemed not only to share virtually all of Soros’s values and agendas, but also appeared to be a highly skilled politician who stood a good chance of getting elected to the nation’s highest office…

In December of 2006, Soros, who had previously hosted a fundraiser for Obama during the latter’s 2004 Senate campaign, met with Obama in Soros’s New York office. Just a few weeks later¯on January 16, 2007¯Obama announced that he would form a presidential exploratory committee and was contemplating a run for the White House. Within hours, Soros sent the senator a contribution of $2,100, the maximum amount allowable under campaign-finance laws. Later that week, the New York Daily News reported that Soros would support Obama rather than Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, though Soros pledged to back the New York senator were she to emerge as the nominee.1 But it was clear that Soros considered Obama to be the more electable candidate of the two. Most importantly, Obama’s economic and political prescriptions for America were wholly accordant with those of Soros.

  9. “Uncle Thomas” would not have gotten into Yale let alone be sitting on the SCOTUS if it wasn’t for affirmative action!

    • Why didn’t you go to Yale, Bobbie? Why did you settle for a crappy school like NYU? Like NYU, Yale or Harvard are close to where you live on the east coast.

      • crappy school like NYU??? Now that’s funny coming from an uneducated idiot that made it through high school at best. Their are many reasons why I choose NYU, one being it’s located right in the middle of Greenwich Village in NYC!!!

        • BWAHAHAHAHA. I got a better education at Indiana University than you did at NYU. You still live pretty close to NYU, don’t you? A long, long way from Malibu, Kalifornia (according to the timeline of your posting back to me). You’re an hour ahead of Central Time (which means you live east of the Mississppi River).

          • To even compare the Private Stern school of business (at NYU) with some country bumpkin public school of business like Kelley (at Indiana university) is absurd. You may or may not be able to tell time & I have had an imposter trying to pretend he was me (you’re a prime suspect) but in any event I can assure you Malibu is west of the Mississippi river.

      • here in phoenix the police use the term bobs, short for burglars on bikes. they use bicycles instead of cars to commit their crimes.

    • Bumbling Barry Oblamer would still be a community agitator in the likes of Al Snitchton without affirmative action. Or perhaps he would be a part time drug dealer or part time burger flipper.

      • Except for 3 small facts that you seem to have overlooked. (1) he was elected to the senate & (2-3) he was elected president TWICE!!!

  10. “Sotomayor, … wrote a 58-page minority report lambasting the majority opinion.” Of course she did!. She is one of the persons who has (undeservedly) gained most from “affirmative action”.

  11. Excellent decision! Why should one race receive preference over everyone else. Merit is the only legitimate criteria.

  12. Three cheers for common sense–and for the good Justice Thomas. Given what passes for jurisprudence these days, I refrain from using the word “Justice”, preferring “Judge” instead (since people can do that without considering true justice), but he’s certainly earned the title; even if he makes a decision I may disagree with, he has a cogent argument for it that doesn’t rely on the Left’s sacred cows. May affirmative action continue to crumble until it is properly disposed of, like all other trash.

  13. Hundreds of white people in a recent Last Resistance forum TOLD Hank Aaron what THEY now know about him … about HIS racism, about HIS ignorance.

‘Cause .. To learn what challenges existed in life in a wheelchair 50 years ago & 2 years ago ~ you listen to wheelchair-confined people.

And …… To learn what challenges existed for black people in the South 50 years ago & 2 years ago ~ you listen to white people. They just know.

The GOP just knows when to rush in and champion a new Darling of the Right Wing …..

Nevada Rancher Cliven Bundy: “I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” Mr. Bundy, said Wednesday.

(See how white people just know they know these things?)

“They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

    • Bundy is the poster boy for the tea party!!! “wondering if negro’s were better off as slaves” while he mooches off federal land!!!

  14. Sonia Sotomayor, Michelle Obama and Barack Hussein Obama are products of Affirmative Action! Their stupidity proves that beyond a doubt! Michelle believed for a long time that the “Underground Railroad” which clandestinely smuggled Negro slaves to freedom was a real railroad. Something like the New York City subway train system! And Barack, well, need I mention all his booboos? And now comes
Sonia who showed her true colors by her dissenting opinion which she even shamelessly read out loud, telling everyone, “hey look how stupid I am!” Has anyone ever heard of the admissions standards being lowered at West Point, Annapolis or any of the service Academies? Of course not! But the Ivy League schools needed to be politically correct. And the result? Sotomayor and her ilk!
