The Real Meaning of Independence Day

It’s Friday, July 4, 2014, and Americans everywhere are firing up their grills and pulling out their stockpiles of technicolor ordnance to celebrate Independence Day. For most, eating too much meat and watching fireworks with the kids is about as far as this celebration will go. And most will never really consider what we are celebrating.

Yesterday, I was at a fireworks display with my kids, and the announcer said today was all about being thankful for the armed forces—for those people who were willing to die to protect our freedoms. I thought that was Memorial Day. Or Veteran’s Day. Unless you count WWII, no one has spilled blood to protect my constitutional freedoms since Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appommatox. Drone killing “suspected” terrorists along with innocent civilians, propping up (or toppling) foreign dictators, and providing firepower for UN coalitions doesn’t count in my book.

In the 18th century, Independence Day commemorated an act of extraordinary courage. Against overwhelming odds, a loosely connected group of colonial governments decided to band together against the greatest empire in the world. We know how the story ended, but they didn’t. By all outward appearances, they had every assurance of failure. A modern-day parallel would be a few pre-industrial third-world countries coming together and declaring war on the United States.

And the craziest thing about it all is that the colonies actually won. They won because they refused to bend their principles to pragmatism. They refused to give up their convictions. They refused to allow fear and security to trump faith and freedom. And these weren’t just buzzwords for ’Merica then. These men and women died for these ideas.

And what’s left of that patriotic fire? We submit gladly to much heavier taxes and exceedingly more tyrannical intrusions from our civil authorities. We bicker about Republicans and Democrats being in office when the entirety of Washington is bent on our subjugation. So much of what was going on in 1776 is occurring again on this same soil. And those who once bled to rid this land of tyranny are in jeopardy of having died in vain while we sheep-like feed on the panem et circenses of bratwursts and fireworks.

I encourage you to read the Declaration of Independence today. But recognize the condition we are in. We don’t have a single enemy like our forefathers did. They could send their grievances to one man—King George. We have more than just one man to blame. Obama may have taken to himself some monarchial powers, but the fact is that Washington, DC now plays the part of King George. Consider just a few of the grievances of the original American patriots, and consider how the whole of our civil government is now repeating those grievances:

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good. . . . He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people. . . . For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments: For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

These grievances are connected. The Federal Government refuses to allow states to rule their own citizens with laws confirmed by the citizens of those states. The Supreme Court regularly overturns local laws, federal bureaucracies routinely encroach on local law enforcement, and state and county governments—the people’s governments—have no real authority to represent the will of the actual people of this country. Local representatives have no say in how this country is governed. That is the worst form of “dissolved Representative Houses.” At least in the case of King George, he made the dissolution publicly apparent. We have it much worse because we are led to believe we actually retain local representative houses. But these are feckless titular bodies hollowed out of any real power.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

The GOP and DNC have rigged the electoral system to maintain power without the consent of the governed. One of the major ways they do this is to hold delegate conventions at locations that are not publicly disclosed, or by changing the venue for delegation conventions when the victory of the mainstream favorite is in question. By maintaining complete control over who is on the ballot, the GOP and DNC have disfigured the American democratic process and called the legitimacy of the sitting government into question.

Furthermore, the federal government “fatigues us into compliance” by making the process of petition and redress impossibly convoluted. They have created a virtual distance that is unusual and uncomfortable.

. . . He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

Wow. Do you really need any application for this grievance? Whatever Offices King George may have erected, he’s got nothing on the current federal government.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

The entirety of our massive standing army—including the purportedly state-controlled National Guard—is under the direct control of the Federal government. Our local police are also becoming increasingly militarized—often through federal subsidies. The majority of states do not have a proper state militia. We are more vulnerable than our forefathers by far.

. . . He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation . . .

The United Nations is a perfect example of this today. There is no reason at all why we should be concerned at all with legislation the UN has created. But, alas, our civil authorities have “given assent to their acts of pretended legislation,” so we are bound to abide by it.

. . . For protecting [troops], by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

Brutality from the federally militarized police and the federal cronies for “homeland defense” regularly goes uninvestigated and unpunished.

. . . For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

Oh my. Since Obamacare has been called a tax, it is just the most recent and largest of taxes imposed on us without our consent. But the list is long and varied. In fact, our forefathers didn’t have to put up with anywhere near the kind of taxation we do.

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:

Thanks to the pathetic provisions of the misnamed PATRIOT Act, you can be held without a trial and even without charges, tried by a military tribunal without being present at the trial, and subject to any number of abuses and intrusions … “legally.” Again, the founding fathers spilled their blood for far less than this.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us . . .

That is the nature of the false narratives of racism, sexism, and homophobia. These are nothing more than the excitations of domestic insurrection to continue thrusting this country into perpetual unrest. A divided country is much easier to rule.

And why are Americans so willing to put up with this prodigious list of abuses? The Founding Fathers had a reason for that as well:

. . . All experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. ((This is uncannily similar to a phrase in Hamlet’s most famous soliloquy, and I would be surprised if Jefferson didn’t have it in mind: “makes us rather bear those ills we have, Than fly to others that we know not of.”))

As bad as things have gotten, this is what we are used to now. Like the proverbial frogs, we don’t even realize we’re nearly cooked. We don’t even think about it anymore.

But, even if you don’t think of it any other day, please consider it today: You have no independence left to celebrate. This Independence Day, like many that have preceded it, is a sham. We are all dependents on and subjects to a tyrannical government. But it may not be too late to recover what the Founding Fathers left to us. There may yet be enough of the original system left to retake the governance of this country from parasites and wastrels. But it will not be easy.

This Independence Day, consider the small band of men who signed their names to what amounted to a death warrant for the slim chance that they could live free for a few more months and possibly secure a free future for their children. They risked it all to secure liberty for themselves and their children. What you are willing to risk?

        Given the current state of corruption in the US governments (at all levels) I am dubious that 6 months is sufficient — more of the enablers in the middle class must fall before the threshold of pain is felt on a sufficient scale.

  4. Well done. I agree with everything except one. The reason the colonies won is not because of the founders refused to compromise principle. They did that and a lot more, however, even they recognized the one, crucial thing that was needed. They won because they were blessed by God Almighty. They understood this and called upon Him for favor and blessing many times during the ensuing struggle. We are free even now because the grace and favor of the LORD was with us then and at many other times in our history. We can reclaim those principles of liberty once more and rise from these socialist ashes but ONLY if we humble ourselves once more and turn to Him again. I pray this happens soon because without God, we have no hope. That’s my take and Happy Independence Day to all!

Now, if the House would just defund the fanatical programs that are arming up, like the IRS, BLM and FEMA. They have no business having an armed army.

The Viet-Nam war and the Korean War were both fought to protect our freedoms, lest the Communists take over all of SE Asia, as they were bent on doing in Africa, in Central and South America, in the Caribbean; and, if eventually they could overcome NATO and the military capacity of the U.S. in particular, Europe. And so, we too could fall, if we let things get that far.

    Those were wars of preventive medicine, the Korean War at least half-won, the V-N War won militarily but the victory unclaimed and the South Vietnamese betrayed in the aftermath. It’s THAT BETRAYAL of which the U.S. should be ashamed.

    And if anybody wonders, yes, Hitler did ultimately have designs on, first, Britain, and then the U.S. And Yes, Stalin and the Soviets did ultimately have World Empire in mind. There’s a reason why it was called the Communist International.

But unfortunately, more and more libertarians seem to be “anti-war,” which, as when the Left uses the term, tends not to mean “anti-war” in the sense of pro-peace, but rather in the sense of “any war we’re in we deserve to lose.” Then people will say No no no, we’re in favor of defensive war, as a last resort of course.

        The trouble is, I have yet to hear of a situation properly met by defensive war. Maybe once DC, NYC, LA, and SF have started emitting the radioactive glow?

        The time is never right, and the cause is never just.

    • You need to look at both sides of the coin. Had we opposed the Korean War, Vietnam, and all other wars, and keep our troops at home where they belong, we could have saved trillions of dollars. The right thing would have been to build an untouchable defense system which would make us feel more secure than sending ground troops all over the effin world.
      As far as WWII, all ain’t necessarily what it seems either. America, France, Britain were afraid of Germany because Germans showed higher intelligence and pulled themselves out of depression and in only a few years became the world leader. That reason, more than any other, was why we demanded that Hitler be the “bad guy”. We did the same thing to Saddam Hussein, Gadahfi, and many others in the world.
      America has more blood on its hands than any nation in the history of the world. We have such bad karma and we are about to pay for that.
      I just hope we rise again. If we maintain high technology I don’t see why we should ever need a federal “government” again. We should never have police forces either since all citizens should own guns from the time they are ten years old, like Swiss. Police should never own guns again.

For all of the daily news and commentary that is passed between online, conservative organizations for transmission to their subscribers, it is usual to see expressions of discontent, outrage, anger, scorn and well-constructed arguments against the travesties which have taken place in government since the election of 2008. What is amazing is that no one has taken any more serious step than to express himself or herself verbally. All of which demonstrates a predictable constraint on the part of conservatives whose respect for the law and the value of human life keeps them from doing anything more serious to change the course that has been charted for us by those whose ideology and political philosophy is held in utter contempt by us. They know we will obey the law and not attempt to stop them. If God does not do it, who will? ” All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” If it is all vanity, it means nothing anyway.

    Although there are so many of us who recognise the tyranny that is rapidly destroying this land of Liberty, I think we are all stymied as to exactly WHAT sort of action to take to ensure our freedom….We all FEAR the IRS…..an agency of the federal government that is feared by most of us….the mere WORD “AUDIT” strikes terror in the hearts of those of us who have worked hard and faithfully “FUNDED” those who would have us subjugated to their whims. We are all meant to toil and surrender the fruits of our labors in order to fund those whose elected position has devolved from representation of the ‘people’ to a position of almost absolute power, which we all know is absolutely CORRUPT.
    I HEAR, I READ, I SEE what is happening and understand it well…….please tell me…..HOW do we FIX IT………….without a Standard Bearer or LEADER…..what can we do…..How do we perform our “RIGHT” and “OUR SACRED DUTY”……
    The Founders were able to accomplish so much….all without our modern day communication abilities………Ours is ONE NATION under GOD…..what once was “INDIVISABLE” has been divided into small segments who distrust each other….how do we reconnect as AMERICANS…..not hyphenated sub-groups….SIMPLY AMERICANS????????

  15. As Americans, we need to somehow unite. Lets do this: each of you submit a brief set of doable actions and I will pull them together into a summary (email them to paulnordin@aol.com). My brief set of doable actions are as follows: (1) draft a petition for redress of our grievances (provide a list grievances and actions required for redress); (2) form a new political party (call it TeamAmerica) and ask everyone to join; (3) Stop using people labels (Conservative, Liberal, Tea Party, etc.) and call everyone a TrueAmerican. I need an email address for everyone. This country needs a balanced budget with national debt reduced to zero in a reasonable time (e.g., 10 years; as you know, our debt is very large). Lots of other issues but we need to start someplace.

  17. This is the best summary about what it going on, right under the noses of a self-absorbed public, that I have read to date. This article needs to be reprinted in pamphlet form (much like Common Sense was) and made available to every citizen to read and ponder. It needs to be read from the mountain tops so all can hear and understand exactly what WE the People, mostly over the past century, have allowed to happen to this Republic.
    We have no time to waste, our Freedom, and our Liberty will be gone in short order if we do not put and end to our overbearing Federal Government, and absolutely demand that it returns to what it was intended to be since 1787 when our Constitution was finally ratified. Independence carries with if a heavy responsibility. Being INDEPENDENT means that each must be DEPENDENT upon themselves! To surrender independence is to accept servitude.

That is why Americans are one of the few peoples not told if their food is GMO – that is why even though U.S. is an oil exporting nation, Americans pay double for gas compared to other oil exporting countries. It is why there is no transaction tax on Wall St gamblers; it is why the rich pay less tax than anyone else; it is why those who want to get ahead with a higher education end up indentured servants to their debt. These are no the fault of some ‘tyrannical government’ – this is the fault of the money grubbing greedy banksters and Wall St speculators.

  19. Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Are you even familiar with the 56 men who
    signed the Declaration of Independence?

    Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died.

    Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

    Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

    Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

    They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

    What kind of men were they?

    Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.
    Eleven were merchants,
    Nine were farmers and plantation owners.

    They were men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

    Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

    Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

    British Torres ( the equivalent of todays Liberals and Progressive Communists) or British Soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Rutledge, and Middleton.

    At the battle of Yorktown , Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed and Nelson died bankrupt.

    Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

    John Hart was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste.
    For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

    So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It’s not much to ask for the price they paid.

    Remember: freedom is never free!

    It is time we get the word out that Patriotism is NOT a sin, and the Fourth of July has more meaning to it than beer, picnics and baseball games.

  20. How about independence from religions being imposed of them like some of you guys seem to want with your form of belief. It is not a Christian country though it is based of wonderful Christian values. I’m Jewish. America is for everyone to have FREEDOM of and from RELIGION..

  21. Excellent article; makes me cry when I focus on the severity of the meaning.
    I believe the last time any American fought for Freedom and Independence was the Civil War, and that would be only the Southern soldiers; the northern soldiers were actually breaking the law of the Constitution so they were most likely ignorant of the truth of the reason for the war, or in very many cases they were coerced to join the northern armies, or they just followed the northern rallying cries.
    Our entire history seems to be a lie. Lincoln was the most despicable of presidents who had killed or maimed two million Americans at a time when 30 million was the entire population; equivalent to 25 million deaths and injured today.
    Lincoln’s sole purpose for war was to centralize govt and punish the South so it would never rise again. How dare they go against this Dictator? So Lincoln gets the biggest monument in the country, a testimony that the Centralization of American Government won a major Revolution against the American People represented by the Southern secessionist states; this we call Civil War.
    We have been The Occupied States of America ever since.
    And while the 4th of July should remind us of a most glorious day, Independence Day 1776, we no longer have independence and every day is just another Dependence Day.
    But fear not, a new day will dawn, and we wait patiently for the inevitable govt crash, then we will act. Our suppressed yearning for Freedom will be borne again, and we will re-institute our great Constitution and hold it as Sacred and any Oath breakers will pay dearly as we regain Freedom and Liberty once again for all time in America. Long live America.
