Apple to Patent App So You Can Be Even More Oblivious

You’ve probably seen it: people hunched over their phones texting away, walking into things—walking into you. Have no fear. Apple is designing an app that will allow them  to walk and text without hitting anything. Listen to this patent-speak technical writing prowess:

An electronic communication device’s camera can continuously capture and present video images as a background within a text messaging session currently being displayed by the device. The camera can be a rear-facing camera on the device, so that the video images represent the views that the device’s user would see if the devices’s diplay were transparent. The camera can continuously capture and present the video images as the background in the text messaging session, so that the device’s user continuously can be aware of the environment beyond the device’s display while still focusing on the text messages being communicated.

If you didn’t read that in “robot voice,” you need to go back and read it again. I think this trend is disturbing. Whether it’s Facebook, Google Glass, or this app—yet to be named or released—it seems the market is dedicated to increasing and highlighting anti-social behavior rather than eliminating it.

Texting while walking apparently causes more accidents than texting while driving. Let that sink in. But do you know what the real solution to the dangers of texting and walking is? Stop texting and walking. Look around. Interact with reality a little bit.

It’s disturbing to see a whole generation buried so deeply in their virtual reality, that an app needs to be created so they can be more oblivious without being hurt. Don’t worry little guy. Hush now baby. Apple is here to hold you. Apple is gonna make sure you don’t fall while you’re being an inhuman jackass within your surroundings.

Sorry, but this stuff just kills me. Virtual life in a virtual space is destroying the next generation. They don’t even realize how vacant they already are.

  1. Usually results in Hyper-Abrupt acceleration in contact with an automobile Ie Run over for being too self absorbed to notice traffic.
Keeps the really stupid ones out of the gene pool, self limiting.

    • Actually, I find the obvious to be true, people talking or texting while on a phone, running red lights and almost hitting me while I am out walking.

This has occurred more than once. Those walking and texting don’t bother me. Those driving and texting, or talking are much more dangerous to my health.

      wouldn’t you think?

      • Amen! We here in Southern Utah just a short while back had an elderly man and his wife hit by a car while walking together on the sidewalk, when a young woman that was driving and texting left the road and killed the husband and crippled his wife for life. The young woman is even now fighting charges of vehicle manslaughter in the Court, and facing a possible 5 years to life in prison. Shalom!

  2. I can see the law suits coming. “Person sues because Apple app does not look both ways before crossing street!” Person sues because Apple app field of view does not show open manhole!” Waiting to happen.

    • Boy have you ever got that right, and it would serve Apple right. “you can’t fix stupid”!

      • Look in the accompanying photo of the blonde walking and texting. The only thing she would see through the phone’s camera would be her feet as she walked. No one holds their smart phone straight out in front of them while they walk. Besides, when you are focusing on a screen in your foreground, anything in the background, including an image on your screen is barely recognizable. Think it’s not? Just look at the road right in front of your car and note that everything beyond that just goes away. That’s why when you drive, they advise you to “aim high in steering”. In other words, when you look way down the road ahead of you, you still see everything in between; but it doesn’t work the other way around!

  3. hahaha… They can call it the Zombie App. After all, that’s what these folks look like… The Walking Dead!

  4. This is preparation for the virtual reality thing you wear and through which you interact with a computer-generated environment.

  5. I can see it now: Boy dates Girl at a restaurant, so they sit across the table video texting each other. How exciting! Shalom!

    • I see it all the time. They don’t say anything because they don’t want anyone to hear what their saying. It never occurs to them that snoopers can pick up every text without their knowledge or consent. NSA does it all the time.

  6. As they march off to the Gulags, they can be comforted they have their little devices to keep them from realizing what’s about to happen.

  7. Would it be anything like – say – Google Glass?

Hardly innovation by Apple — more like BS PR.

  8. How is texting unsociable? Presumably you are texting with another erosion and that discussion likely involves reality.

    • I understand what you’re saying but it is rather the opposite. People today sit and text or facebook with a circle of “friends” many of whom they do not know at all…. All while typically tuning out and ignoring the ACTUAL people around them. It is unsociable and rude. Same thing for people who walk around with headphones blaring all the time…. You’re shutting out the real world and the environment you’re actually IN for a virtual substitute.. http://www.kjv-truth-ministries.org

    • Exactly how do you convey the subtle things like sarcasm through texting? Can you guess to what degree my sarcasm is right now? No, you can’t.
A happy face emoticon 🙂 is not equal to a beautiful smile.

  9. Oh…I don’t whether to laugh or just write off the human race; maybe send them a tweet. Sheeple have bought into the marketing of sending notes in class through a device. How cute. Good lord, if I’d have realized just how stupid the masses are, I would have come up with…”Global Warming” and scared them into giving me billions.

    • Sure i’ve done that before not while dating but locking the door and trying to keep my prejudging dad who does not want me to hang out with girls yet from reading my text messages. Very popular form of conversation, especialy when you are a shy 16 year old.

  10. I have seen the Texting Drivers almost run over the texting pedestrians. never a good contest. The car always wins.

  11. New word to describe the evils of this new technology: Devilution (evolution by and for Satan).

  12. So very true. I have never seen anything like it before. Just look around you, in restaurants, parks, church, walking down the sidewalks, doctor’s offices, people no longer interact with the person sitting next to them. It is truly sad and is warping our society.

  13. Quit it, Michael. You know you cannot dumb down society and enslave them by encouraging them to wake up, look up, and engage in interaction with your fellow man/woman.

The ultimate goal of the evil one is for everyone to be so stupid they accept world government.

  14. a company with the symbol of a bitten apple does not fare well for those that are trying to not fall into the same temptation Eve fell for..

  15. Continuing to use inefficient and dangerous touch screen texting is especially moronic now. The voice command systems, Google Now and Siri have gotten so good that you can do pretty much anything by just speaking to your device. This allows you to keep your eyes on where you are walking or on the road ahead. In many cases you can use a bluetooth device and you don’t even have to take your phone out of your pocket.

Technology does offer much better and safer solutions. Smart people will adopt them, dumb people will discover how natural selection works and will get themselves removed from the gene-pool.

  16. Stupid enough to text while not paying attention to your ‘environment? You deserve to get run-over.
